Next generation sequencing (Conceição Egas)

Exome sequencing and analysis
The high throughput next generation sequencing technologies enable the access to the complete genome information either as whole genome or the less intensive but more informative exome. This course will address exome sequencing and analysis.
Theoretical classes:
i)    Sample preparation and sequencing
ii)    Data analysis: from raw reads to variant calling
Practical classes: Detection of mutations on selected exomes using the ExomeLoupe.

Production and purification of recombinant proteins (Isaura Simões)

Particular emphasis will be given to gene expression systems, protein expression and purification strategies. The course will deal with new cloning methods such as CPEC or SLIC, and multi-tiered protein expression approaches for parallel recombinant protein expression and protein purification in E.coli.

Protein identification using Mass Spectrometry (Bruno Manadas)

i)    Protein primary structure, proteome and proteome analysis
ii)    Protein and peptide resolving techniques
iii)    Protein identification by mass spectrometry
iv)    Quantitative mass spectrometry approaches
v)    Case studies
