Objectives:
This course was designed to provide both basic and state of the art knowledge in the various fields of Immunology. In particular, the course will provide an insight of the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the innate and acquired immune responses. The mechanisms and role of inflammation as part of the immune response and its implications in pathology, particularly in cardiovascular diseases, will be highlighted. The second part of the course will cover the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the immunological response towards infectious agents, with a special emphasis on the role of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in pathology and the signalling mechanisms involved. Finally, an overview of the pathophysiology of autoimmunity will also be provided.
