April 2 - 6
Celeste Lopes and Teresa Martins
Objectives:This course aims at providing basic and state-of-the-art knowledge in oncobiology. Features to be covered include the cell cycle and apoptosis, focusing on alterations that occur during cancer development, the genetics and epigenetics of cancer, namely the role of tumour suppressor genes and oncogenes, mutations, aneuploidy and regulation of gene expression. The role of infection and inflammation in cancer development will also be addressed. The course will also focus on invasion mechanisms and metastasis development, including the role of matrix metalloproteinases, adhesion molecules, chemokines and stromal-tumour interface. Targets of directed anti-cancer therapies and strategies for the development of new patient-specific therapies will also be addressed.
