Biology, especially in its translational and interdisciplinary aspects, is a fundamental Science in the 21st Century, and all indicators point to increased investment, namely in terms of socially relevant Biomedical research. Scientific training in this field must be demanding and flexible, involving high quality researchers with different backgrounds and approaches.

The goal of the PhD Programme in Experimental Biology and Biomedicine (PDBEB) is to train a new generation of scientists able not only to perform cutting-edge Biomedical research but also to translate findings into translational approaches and ventures that create added value. The PDBEB focuses on the areas of 1) Neuroscience and Brain Diseases; 2) Metabolism and Aging; and 3) Advanced Therapies. Aging, the Brain and Advanced therapies are major challenges in Biomedicine, and these are also the areas of intervention of the CNC-Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, and where PDBEB is based.

The Neuroscience and Brain Diseases Area at CNC comprises researchers with a comprehensive know-how ranging from molecular studies to brain circuits, who address fundamental questions on brain function and its impairment. The groups in this area also aim to pinpoint mechanisms of brain diseases, focusing particularly in defects on synaptic processes and on brain metabolism, in order to design effective therapies.
The Metabolism and Aging Area links cellular dysfunction (namely mitochondrial activity and oxidative stress), with metabolism-based changes in diabetes, cancer, neurodegenerative and aging-related disorders, in order to unveil basic mechanisms that suggest therapeutic targets and diagnostic methods.
The Advanced Therapies Area investigates translational advanced therapies for neurodegenerative, cardiovascular and infectious diseases, as well as cancer, through i) investigation of new nucleic acid-based therapies with viral and non-viral vectors; ii) establishment of stem cell-based therapies and assays for drug screening; iii) development of methods for cell reprogramming and stem cell differentiation.

PDBEB aims to train highly skilled professionals that will be internationally competitive in basic scientific research, the development of novel therapeutic and diagnostic tools, relevant clinical and pre-clinical models, as well as biotechnology applications. Training will be multidisciplinary, to guarantee a wide range of knowledge and expertise networks, crucial for innovation. Students will spend most of their time in the laboratory, first in lab rotations embedded in CNC groups, then in the lab of their choice for Thesis development.
